Changes to Eel and Elver Fishing Regulations

The European Eel Regulations 2009 set targets for eel stock recovery and, in response, the Environment Agency have developed Eel Management Plans to work towards achieving them. To ensure the Regulations are not breached, Defra and the Environment Agency have been required to make changes for 2010 to the way the eel and elver fishery is managed, such as the introduction of a reduced fishing season.

There have also been changes to catch return forms and the information which licence holders need to provide - particularly when selling live eels and elvers. The Environment Agency have written to eel and elver fisherman to explain these changes and the reasons behind them. Our long term aim is to reverse the decline in eels in England and Wales.

The updated eel and elver byelaws, application form and guidance can be found in the forms and guidelines section of this website.

If you require any further information please contact the Environment Agency’s Fisheries Permitting Team on 01480 483968.
