Koi Herpesvirus Disease Consultation – Health Status in England and Wales

Why A Consultation?

Defra has launched a consultation on which health status would be most appropriate for Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) disease in England and Wales. Member States are required to declare a health status for each of the non-exotic diseases listed in Directive 2006/88/EC. For most of the listed diseases, England and Wales already have a defined health status. However, this is not the case for KHV.

Add Your Views

Your views are invited on which health status should be declared for England and Wales in respect of the Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) disease. This is the first time KHV will come under Community controls. Therefore we must decide on one of the five possible health status options - set out in the Directive - that is the most appropriate for KHV disease in England and Wales.

Choosing A Health Status

Each health status establishes the level of controls England and Wales can introduce on movements of KHV susceptible & vector species of fish. This includes placing them on the market – ie movement between different Member States, zones or compartments – and imports from 3rd countries – ie from outside the Community. This allows for the establishment of effective controls to reducing the risk of the introduction and spread of KHV.

More information

Your views and comments regarding the consultation should be submitted by the closing date of 17 August 2009.
