THE PROHIBITION OF KEEPING OR RELEASE OF LIVE FISH (SPECIFIED SPECIES)(AMENDMENT)(ENGLAND) ORDER 2003

February 2003

I am writing to advise you of an amendment to the current Order made under the Import of Live Fish (England and Wales) Act 1980.

Following a public consultation in early 2002 we have added a number of non-native fish species to the existing list. For ease of reference these additions are highlighted in the 'Controls on Non-Native Species' section of this website. If you wish to introduce and/or keep any of these fish species then you must obtain a licence to do so.

You will wish to note that Red Shiner and Fathead Minnow have been added to the General Licence. This authorises their keeping in indoor aquaria (other than aquaria on retail or wholesale premises). Members of the public who keep such fish for their own enjoyment therefore do not need an individual licence. However, all retailers, wholesalers and dealers who intend to sell such fish must obtain a licence.

If you keep, or wish to introduce and/or keep any of the other fish species then I am afraid I must ask you to complete the application form and return to CEFAS.
You should hear from us within a month of receipt of your application. Please bear with us if it takes a little longer to formally respond. If you have any queries please contact either:

Carol Billson 0207 238 5931

Yours sincerely
