Conservation of Native Freshwater Fish Stocks

On the 4th January 2002, DEFRA announced that it intended to increase the number of non-native species, whose keeping and release in Great Britain is controlled under the Import of Live fish Act 1980.

This is to be achieved by an amendment to the Prohibition of Keeping of Live Fish (Specified Species) Order 1998.

The first stage of this process is a public consultation through which interested parties can comment on various aspects of the proposals. DEFRA has produced a formal consultation letter, which contains details of the reasoning behind the proposals, a list of the species involved, and an assessment of the potential impact of these species on our native fauna.

A copy of this letter can be found on the DEFRA website at http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/livefish-order/index.htm
